The Old Grammar School
The Grammar SchoolThis was originally built by Edward Halsall in 1593 and was a two story building with its own entrance and exit and no direct access to the church. The lower part was for the boys to use as a classroom and the upper floor as living accommodation for the master. The school was originally for 15 boys but as numbers grew a new building was constructed close to the churchyard. This replacement building is no longer standing having been demolished.
The roof was lowered and a doorway opened up in to the church and so the former grammar school is now used as the choir vestry. The room has large windows and on the walls there are the old charity boards which detail the contributions made for the poor.
The latest enhancement for this room is the addition of a toilet and kitchen thus making the room a valuable resource for the church. Not only is the room used for choir practice but it has also returned to its school use every Sunday when the Jam Club use it for the Sunday School.
