St Nicholas Chapel
Once the tower and and spire had been built the Church would have been visible to boats off shore. It is this proximity to the coast and the visibility to sailors which makes the dedication to St Nicholas of Myra seem the likely explanation reason (he is the patron saint of sailors) There is a traditionthat from early times a lighted lamp was placed in the spire to guide seafarers.
